Matthew Hits Haiti, Their Strongest Hurricane in 52 Years
By: Jeff Masters , 1:21 PM GMT on October 04, 2016

Powerful Hurricane Matthew made landfall on the southwestern tip of Haiti near 7 am EDT October 4, 2016 as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds. Matthew’s extreme rains, large storm surge, and Category 4 winds are likely to be catastrophic for Haiti. The hurricane is the third strongest one ever recorded in the impoverished nation, and their strongest hurricane in 52 years. The only Haitian hurricanes stronger than Matthew were two Category 4 storms with 150 mph winds: Hurricane Cleo of 1964 and Hurricane Flora of 1963. The last major hurricane to make a direct hit in Haiti was Category 3 Hurricane David of 1979, which crossed over the nation from east to west with 115 mph winds.

Hurricane Matthew is predicted to skirt or make landfall on the Southwestern tip of Haiti Tuesday morning. This is a large Category 4 hurricane that will most likely bring heavy winds, a predicted 10-15 foot storm surge and torrential rains to parts of Haiti. Jeff Kotrady from CC Fort Lauderdale spoke with Pastor Sam in Jacmel, Haiti. they are currently evacuating local residents to shelters. Please pray for our pastors, churches and the people of Haiti.

 LOUISIANA FLOOD RELIEF:

Calvary Chapel Old  Bridge (New Jersey) and Calvary Christian Fellowship (Baton Rouge)

Today we did a community outreach outside of one of the shelters that the people who have been flooded out of their homes are staying at. We provided them with a free meal (chicken kabobs, beans, salad, and fun dip!) bibles, connection to the Calvary Chapel in Baton Rouge, a listening ear, and prayer. I was AMAZED at how well this outreach was received by the people. Almost every single person gave their lives to Christ and accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior for the very first time or rededicated their lives to Jesus. It was such a blessing to lead these beautiful people to the Lord, pray with them, and give them the hope for the future that only Jesus can provide. The Holy Spirit moved so powerfully over this event! Such an honor and a blessing to be a part of it.

LOUISIANA FLOOD:

Our team from CC Costa Mesa arrived home last night. It was an absolutely awesome trip. We were able to complete 3 homes and got a good start on another, as well as help out with Distribution Ministries and Food Outreaches at the Relief Centers. We had the opportunity to fellowship and work with brothers and sisters from other CC's and ministries, and made some new friends on the work sites. This is an incredible ministry that is meeting so many needs. Next week's schedule shows CC Moreno Valley, CC Cornerstone, and CC Foley responding to help out the victims of the flood. Words can only go so far to explain how grateful the victims have been and how blessed our teams are. Please pray about becoming involved in this missions work. We need prayer, finances, but most of all we need you. You are the ambassadors, the hands and feet of Jesus. Your presence will make a difference.

CALVARY CHAPEL RELIEF: Louisiana Flood
Today we tackled a mobile home in Denham Springs. A woman had purchased the home a month before the floods and was in the process of moving to a site that did not flood. Unfortunately the flood came before the move. The owner's son, Matthew and his brothers, had removed 4 ft of drywall, but power was cut and the mold continued to grow. Our team was tasked with removing the rest of the drywall. This was a particularly challenging task, because we had no power and all of the drywall was not only nailed but glued to the studs. Once again the team worked really well together and accomplished a lot. We also had a great time talking, sharing and praying with Matthew.

CALVARY CHAPEL RELIEF: Louisiana Flood
Calvary Chapel Old Bridge

We were blessed to have a team from Calvary Chapel Havasu, in Arizona, help us and almost completely cleared and gutted the home in one afternoon. It was full of black mold. Please keep this family in prayer during this difficult time that they be blessed with provision. Pray to keep our team safe as we work on this project all week. It has been a blessing to get to know this family and their children in the process.
The Lord blessed us with an 18-wheeler full of free food to help sustain the relief workers and give away as donations. Then we went back to finish gutting out Emma's home in the afternoon.
Our team got assigned to continue work on a Pastor's house that was already fully gutted. Our job was to remove all the nails from the walls and screws from the ceiling so that new sheetrock could be put up. Working with a crowbar and cordless drill over your head for hours straight is a lot harder than it looks! On our break we visited and fed the animals in the backyard. ☺️ After a long day, we went to mid-week service at Calvary Chapel Baton Rouge.

This was a walk through that we did of a home belonging to Roxanne and Blaine in Prairieville, LA.  It was just about a week ago that the waters receded enough for them to even begin work on their home.  As you can see in the video, the water line was clearly marked by the very heavy mold growth.  Portions of the floor had also rotted and a couple of us fell through portions of it before we laid down walkways.  We are going to eventually remove 4 foot of drywall and all the sub flooring.

This is fun to watch. One of the guys shot some slow motion footage as we dropped the carport cover. After cutting the joists at the house and kicking out a support post the entire structure came down right where we wanted it.

Today teams from CC Old Bridge and CC Costa Mesa off-loaded two 53 ft trailers of donated bedroom furniture and mattresses. We filled the entire warehouse with the donated goods. Once again proving that if you avail yourself to God, He will provide.
Tonight we are expecting 64 volunteers at the Relief Center with Teams from: CC Costa Mesa, CC Old Bridge, CC Havasu, CC Chapel Hill, CC Aurora, CC Westgrove, and CC Golden Springs
