Heavy rains caused severe flooding in parts of Texas and Oklahoma on Sunday.  As waters rose, river banks burst, and hundreds of homes were destroyed across the region.  The Blanco River, one of the worst hit rivers in Texas crested at 43ft, some 30ft above the designated flood stage and 7ft higher than the 1929 record.  There were at least 3 reported deaths, with another 12 reported missing. Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed.

The National Weather Service says recent storms have set a new monthly rainfall record for Oklahoma City — 18.19 inches through Saturday. The previous May rainfall record was 14.52 inches in 2013, and the previous all-time monthly rainfall total was 14.66 inches in June 1989.

nepal: earthquake update may 17, 2015

5/17/2015

Part of the original assessment team has returned to the USA and will be debriefing us with their assessment and plans for future outreach to the victims of the 2 earthquakes.  The greatest physical needs are food and shelter.  Our teams have made connections with organizations in Nepal and have offered to help purchase and move supplies to villages severely impacted by the disasters.  Obviously the spiritual needs within Nepal are equally as great, with Hinduism making up a reported 81.3% of the population whereas only 1.4% profess Christianity.  Our plans include not only meeting the physical needs of the people of Nepal, but doing it with Christ's Ambassadors.  Would you pray about joining a team and going yourself, or helping to support someone.  There is nothing that comforts like a caring friend, when all has been lost.  We have been given an opportunity to be that to the people of Nepal.

At a UN meeting we found out that over 8 million people have been affected here in Nepal by the earthquake. 2.5 million are without shelter, 800,000 have left Kathmandu Valley, over 8000 people have died, and 18,000 people have been injured. Please continue to pray as we are narrowing down where we feel the Lord may be leading us to work.

Using the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument on the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1A satellite scientists at the German Aerospace Center were able to create a map showing the effects of the two resent earthquakes on the landscape of Nepal.  The red areas show upward movement of as much as 4.6 feet, while the blue shows areas of depression.  It was caused by a slip along the fault line, between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, that may have moved almost 20 feet.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal today, with it's epicenter close to Mount Everest.  I just spoke to Brent Kaser.  He reported that everyone on the team and at the Bible college are OK.  Gary Kusenoki was in one of the outer villages and may be stranded, but has reported that he too is OK.  Brent said it was a very strong earthquake and that the people are very scared.  They will once again be sleeping outside tonight.
