packing ideas for team leaders

TEAM LEADERS:

As a Team Leader you are responsible for the safety of your team.  When traveling to disaster sites within the USA, or foreign countries, you may experience adverse weather, unsafe traveling conditions, no electrical service, civil unrest, no drinkable water, etc., situations that may become life threatening. It is important that each member of your team be aware of potential hazards and needs, and pack accordingly, but it is your responsibility to safely get all your team there and back.  Therefore along with the regular packing items it may be wise to have some or all of the items listed below:

First Aid Kit
It would be impossible to pack everything you might need for first aid emergency, but a small kit designed to stop bleeding, prevent infection, help immobilize, and care for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns is advised.

Communications:
Communications may be your only link with the outside world.  If for any reason you need help and are in a place where there is none, you will need reliable communications.
        Cell Phone
        Satellite Phone
Radio (Hand-held walkie Talkie style: Vehicle to Vehicle and short range communications)

GPS (Global Positioning System)
Today GPS’s are small and inexpensive.  Most new Smartphones have GPS built into them.  If, however, you have no cell phone service, you have no GPS locator.  Therefore it never hurts to have a small handheld devise.  This way, even if you are lost, you can always give someone your coordinates and get help to your location.

Solar Charger
Portable Solar Chargers enable you to charge rechargeable batteries and many of your electronic devises.  They are great if you are going somewhere where there is no electricity or you and your team become stranded somewhere.

Flashlight/light sticks
This should be a part of every travelers kit, but I’ll list it here just to make sure it gets packed. There are so many flashlight options today, solar charging, built in manual chargers, as well as standard battery operated.  The new LED technology has produce flashlights that are not only very powerful but will operate much longer then older bulbs.  If you and your team are stuck somewhere without power or light, you’ll want a flashlight.  Light sticks are also very inexpensive, easy to pack and can give you an entire evening of heatless chemical lighting.

Water Purifier Pump
A small hand pump water filter will allow you to produce a pretty large amount of drinkable water should your team get stranded somewhere where there is no drinkable water.

Team Members Documentation
You should have a copy of each team members Application form, that should contain all contact, medical, and passport information on it.  There should also be a copy of the form back home with your ministry.  Should a medical emergency arise or a passport get lost, you’ll need that information.

EXTRA ITEMS YOU MAY WANT:

GOOD KNIFE OR MULTITOOL (Be sure not to pack this in your Carry on luggage).
FIRE STARTER
PARACHUTE CORD
SIGNAL MIRROR
WHISTLE
