Hurricane Sandy 2012
On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy, or as it was called, “Superstorm Sandy” officially made landfall on the northeaster coast of the United States. It was the largest storm (measuring diameter) of any Atlantic hurricane on record, with winds spanning 1,100 miles in diameter. The storm did an estimated $68 billion dollars worth of damage and claimed at least 286 people. Immediately following the storm our churches on the East Coast began mobilizing. While churches like CC Jesus Fellowship in Leonardo, NJ, turned their churches into relief centers and started feeding and clothing their community CC Old Bridge and CC Cornerstone set up an operations base in Ocean Grove, NJ from which we were able to house teams and supplies and then send them into the impacted areas to administer Christ’s love through acts of feeding, debris removal, construction, and counsel. Almost immediately teams began responding from all over the United States. As our churches worked in the New Jersey area, other Calvary Chapels and affiliates were at work further north in New York. Operations continued for about 6 months during which time, families were fed, moved back into their homes, and many came to hear about and receive Christ as their Lord and Savior.
